I think you're interpresting the table wrong.
That is the gross short sale report. i.e. how many shorts that day.
The aggregate short sale report is more important (IMO): https://asic.gov.au/Reports/Daily/2021/03/RR20210319-001-SSDailyAggShortPos.csv

Shorts are actually increasing to 662,000
I expect the SP to be held down for a another few weeks, should fly back to 12 once they close out their position ( I guess).
If they pull it down to $9, good buying territory!
Someone did try back in 2018-19, but lost a lot of money.
