It looks a bit like bhp/gemco have been playing someone for a bit of a sucker, they've been paying some pseudo intellectual (maybe a well meaning ex schoolteacher or social worker) who has close ties with the locals to help talk the share price down, when they feel it's low enough they will move in take over GR and have the rights to mine the sea bed around the island and probably not worry too much about the traditional owners and their song lines or the dugongs and turtles they may look after the odd shovel nose shark but most of those would have moved to Katherine and are living off their thirty pieces of silver, too ashamed of what they have inadvertantly done to return to the island.

The moral of this story must surely be never trust a mining company (or their stooges).

I do hope this is a work of fiction.
