You don't pay tax on unrealised stock price gains. That's why there is tax loss selling - i.e. you need to sell the shares to realise the tax loss to offset something else.
Wincent probably needed to free up some cash to pay something, while also crystallising a tax loss to offset something else - double win. This works because AVL is probably the biggest dog stock he owns, which is the saddest part of this - even our MD can benefit from the sh## share price of this company.
