It appears to be a grey area, peterlip. I'm not sure that blackout periods and/or trading windows are prescribed these days, either by the ASX or ASIC.
The general principle is that directors should not be trading if possessed of information likely to affect the share price. Buying on the inside knowledge of a major gold strike would not be regarded favourably by regulators. Nor would an announcement of a significant contract.
