One of my other biotechs (RCE) scored its second strike this year which I voted for, so shows that participating in the 'democratic' process can work. It may only make a difference if there are independent directors committed to changing the culture that nominate and get elected, but certainly a message is sent to the current board.

Personally I'd much rather director remuneration for startups be paid as shares or options rather than cash, to align their goals with shareholders. I own other startups where directors are paid 100% in shares, at the market price when the remuneration was due. This not only conserves cash, but seriously aligns their interests with those of shareholders.
