Former Murchison Metals and MZI Resources boss Trevor Matthews has wasted no time finding a new gig, with the mining veteran to be announced today as the new managing director of graphite upstart Volt Resources.

Matthews only stepped down from his managing director’s post on November 7. At the time, MZI said the board and Mr Matthews had “mutually agreed the time was right to transition to a new managing director” as the company’s Keysbrook mineral sands mine south of Perth ramped up production.

He is arguably best known for running Murchison during the iron ore boom and securing a $3 billion deal with Japan’s Mistubishi, although the partnership came unstuck in 2011 when Murchison ran out of cash and sold its stake to its partner.

His imminent appointment to Volt comes just weeks before the expected delivery of the group’s pre-feasibility study over its Namangale graphite project in Tanzania. Volt had shot from 3c to 15c on the back of its move into graphite this year, but it has pulled back to 7c in recent weeks, in line with a wider reality check in the graphite space.

Matthews will join BC Iron chief Alwyn Vorster on the Volt board, which is chaired by former Magnis Resources director Stephen Hunt.

His appointment continues a run of executive changes in the graphite world. Sector leader Syrah Resources triggered panic a few months back when it announced the sudden resignation of managing director Tolga Kumova, while Magnis had a similar experience when the recently appointed directors Len Eldridge and Cobb Johnstone departed.
