My understanding is that you can have too much inflammation and that can cause damage as well as inhibiting repair because the blood and lymph flow in and out of the area is congested.

Inflammation on overdrive can also damage healthy tissue. Patients with COVID that end up in ICU have been experiencing cytokine storms that stop the body functioning effectively and damage critical organs.
