Dr Alex Sava

The group was founded in 2014 by Dr Alex Sava. Alex has over 40 years experience in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and built environments.

At 16 Alex was performing a whole range of routine microbiological and chemical assays employed in wine making. Due to supply shortages in his native USSR, the media and reagents often needed to be prepared from available supplies, such as local butcher-sourced hoofs and bones. All these challenges provided Dr Sava with innovative problem-solving skills and an in-depth knowledge of test methodologies.

Then as a MSc and PhD student in mid 1980’s Dr Sava, as a member of the team developing high tech semiconductor manufacturing technologies, was fascinated with the impact of the air and water impurities on the quality of the final products.

In 1986 based in Kiev just 90 km from the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Dr Sava worked closely with the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, helping to assay everything from foods, soils and plants to air samples and baby pram surfaces, for traces of radiation and fusion by-products.

This unique combination of cross-discipline skills - from wine making to nuclear technologies and missile components - helped Dr Sava secure his first executive business assignment, as an Account Executive and then Vice President of the New-York-based Micromax Computer Intelligence. Setting up the test facilities and quality management systems at the world’s largest uranium enrichment facilities.

In the early 1990s Dr Sava moved to Australia where he joined Novapharm Research, simultaneously building a real estate portfolio with holdings around the world.

Whilst with Novapharm, Dr Sava has invented, patented and commercialised a number of world-first, breakthrough technologies:

• Multi-enzyme detergents with active enzymes compatible with flexible endoscopes and similarly fragile instruments (>$20M pa, marketed by 3M and Getinge worldwide)

• Aerosol (nanonebulant) hydrogen peroxide disinfection process, becoming a co-founder of Nanosonics Ltd. Today Nanosonics is in top 200 ASX companies with over $2bn market capitalisation.

• World-first prion deactivating by neutral enzymatic detergents. (marketed worldwide by Getinge and Ecolab) with turnover reaching $10-12M pa).

• Environmentally-friendly disinfection technologies based on symbiotic combinations of natural enzymes with minute amounts compatible biocides. Making the medical instrument reprocessing safe for both hospital staff and the environment (marketed by Getinge, Ecolab, Aeris, >$25M pa).

• Probiotics-based mould decontamination and prevention treatments (Aeris).

A founding director of Nanosonics Ltd (2000-2007) and a non-executive director of Aeris Environmental (2016-2019)

Since 1996 Dr Sava has been actively involved in every aspect of hospital infection control, from routine testing of hospital environmental surfaces, air, medical instruments, skin to actively participating in standard test method developments with regulatory bodies worldwide.

In 2007 Novapharm acquired ISO 13485-certification with over 2,000-pages of risk assessments and regulatory compliance documentation, chemical and microbiological test protocols authored by Dr Sava.

Since the early 2000s Dr Sava has participated and presented at many U.S. (The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), European (ICPIC, International Conference of Prevention and Infection Control) and WFHSS (World Federation for Hospital sterile supply), authoring over 30 international patents and tens of scientific articles.

Through his involvement with Aeris Environmental, Dr Sava had successfully upscaled hospital-based disinfection technologies to large industrial installations (cooling towers, air handling units) and even desalination plants.
