WOA Global leader in lupin protein production

Prolupin GmbH, a leading European producer of lupin protein, has been acquired by Wide Open Agriculture (WOA), an Australian regenerative food and agriculture company. This acquisition grants WOA immediate access to commercial-scale manufacturing capacity in Europe, allowing it to introduce its Buntine Protein to the market.

The facility in Grimmen, Germany, currently produces 500 tonnes per annum of lupin protein concentrate but will be upgraded to 1,000 tonnes per annum within one to two years. WOA aims to leverage Prolupin’s patented technology, trademarks, and established B2B network in the European plant-based dairy market to expand its reach.
This move positions WOA as a global leader in lupin protein production and accelerates the shift toward sustainable, plant-based nutrition.

Now Hungry China going to need a big ship

Wide Open Agriculture (WOA) in Western Australia is positioning itself to meet China's growing demand for lupin-based protein. The company has secured export approval and signed an exclusive distribution deal with Univar Solutions China to market and sell its lupin protein isolate. .
China's plant-based protein market is projected to grow significantly, reaching $12 billion by 2030 with a 12.4% compound annual growth rate. WOA's lupin protein is seen as a premium, non-GMO alternative to soy, aligning with China's Healthy China 2030 strategy, which prioritizes plant-based nutrition.
WOA's agreement with Univar requires a minimum purchase order of 50 tonnes within the first year, with Univar leading market testing and engagement. The company is also working with local food manufacturers to develop lupin-based products tailored to Chinese consumer preferences, including protein powders, plant-based dairy alternatives, and lupin-based tofu.
If demand continues to rise, WOA could play a significant role in supplying China with lupin protein. However, success will depend on market adoption, regulatory developments, and competition from other plant-based protein sources.
