Sallybarks goes to the Farmers’ Market
Sallybarks goes to the fruit aisle in farmer’s market early every Sunday before sunrise.
That’s a pun.
WEEK 1
There are only two vendors ready, Farmer A and Farmer C.
There is a small crowd of people around Farmer A.
Sallybarks has purchased from Farmer C before but wants to check out other farmers.
So he goes up to Farmer A, who has a big sign ”Apple basket $3”.
SB: Hi there mate. Shopping for some apples. $3 looks pretty good. What’s the deal ?
FA: Darned right. Should be $4 or $5, based on that Farmer C over there, overpriced bloke.
SB: Well, are your apples as good ?
FA: Just as good, and that Farmer C wants $7 while mine are only $3. I should raise prices.
SB: Why don’t you, then ?
FA: Nobody buys when I raise prices. It’s very unfair. I should be getting more than Farmer C.
SB: There must be a reason. Do yours taste as good ?
Bystander: What are you, a spy for Farmer C ? Farmer A is a great guy !
Farmer A is a good farmer. You are downramping his apples.
SB: Look, I just wanted to check out Farmer A here, I have bought from Farmer C before but…”
Bystander : “AHA! I knew it. You are a spy for Farmer C! Get out of here !”
WEEK 2
Sallybarks goes to the market again. Sallybarks goes over to Farmer C, who is talking to one of the bystanders from the week before.
Bystander: Your apples are $7, but the chap over there has a similar basket for only $3.
You are overpriced, mate
FC No, I’m not. Because with my basket of apples, you get a special variety called a platinapple.
Plus you get this big gift basket, right here next to the apples.
Bystander: I don’t want the gift basket. I just want the apples. The gift basket is worthless overpriced stuff.
Only the yuppies with BMWs from Melbourne want that stuff. I’ll give you $3.
FC: Mate, You don’t even know what is in the gift basket.
Bystander: Well…gotta admit…you’re right. Hey what’s a platinapple ?
FC: Very tasty new variety.
Bystander: Yeah, I’ve heard of it. But Farmer A has them too, I bet. And his are $3.
FC: I know my platinapples are going to cook up well, and you get the gift basket.
Bystander: Nobody is going to buy your stuff at $7. It’s stupid when Farmer A has the same for $3.
FC: I’m not worried about it. I do lots of business and people like my gift basket.
Bystander: I don’t trust you. Maybe I’ll see you next week to learn about the gift basket.
FC: I’ll be here.
WEEK 3
Bystander: Tell me about the gift basket. There is a lot of weird looking stuff in it.
FC: OK, the first thing here is the Metal Melon seed assortment. Comes in gold and radioactive, very popular. You get full assortment of Metal Melons with seeds. We got cobalt, zinc, copper, silver, nickel, scandium…Just drop ‘em into your waste dump. They start producing right away. We got twelve varieties now and we will send you new varieties as they are developed on our research farm.
Bystander: You got a research farm ?
FC: Well, yeah. Actually a couple of them. Different places.
Bystander: Pretty impressive. But I came here for apples.
FC: Go buy from Farmer A then.
Bystander: What are those things ?
FC: Waterberries. Ours are long life, easy maintenance. They grow anywhere…China, India, Mid-east, Africa.
And the waterberries can also grow near mines and factories.
Bystander: I don’t know. I like hard rocky things. But they do sound interesting.
What’s in that box in the gift basket next to the Metal Melons ?
FC: That’s the Sprout-a-Mine seed kit box. There’s lots of different kits. Depends on what your garden soil is like.
Say your soil has a lot of germanium. You set up the germanium kit and you get germanium.
Bystander: No sheet ! I don’t believe it.
FC: Why not ? Technology moves fast these days, mate.
Bystander: So you get all the apples, plus the Platinapple, all the Waterberries, all the Sprout-a-Mine seed kits, and all the Metal Melons for $7 ?
FC: Yes. Plus all the new varieties in vanadium and scandium.
Bystander: Included for the $7 ?
FC: That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, mate. But if you just want apples, Farmer A has them over there for $3. He’s trying to raise prices. So am I. We could both use some extra quid in the bank. These farms are expensive to run. Farmer A is doing well, he got here early too.
Sallybarks: Excuse me, may I have a an order of apples with a gift box ?
Farmer C: Sure. How many would you like ?
