The fact that they have to buy or lease land shows that they don't have any good relationships with growers; otherwise they would have been able to do on-farm trials with growers and get them involved in the process too. The use of trial farms is outdated and not used a lot anymore in the US, AU, CA etc., because they tend to not use the same treatments growers do. Trial farms tend to throw everything and the kitchen sink at their crops in order to get the best results possible; growers prefer to see on-farm trials as the inputs used are a lot more realistic in those scenarios.

The fact that they have to partner up with a Canadian based cannabis processing company, NextLeaf, instead of with one of the Oregon based industrial hemp processing companies, shows desperation. There is a big difference in growing industrial hemp and marijuana - one focusses on creating maximum biomass, the other on premium quality marijuana with the desired thc level. Industrial hemp gets used for a variety of different applications, which makes that almost 100% of the plant can be used/sold for something (little waste) - marijuana is a completely different game.

Instead of partnering up local with growers and processing companies, conducting on-farm trials and integrating their technology with current 0n-farm practices, this approach is showing that the CLI management is very far removed from reality and trying hard to waste whatever little bit of money they have left. Land in the Willamette valley doesn't come cheap and thinking they can run a farm better than a farmer, is just plain.... dumb or arrogant! Or both.
