Long time lurker, first time poster on MVF.
My take, opinion, and assumption (remembering that assumption is the mother of all stuff ups) is…..
1 – this is a same sex female couple.

2 – both women over time have had egg collections done (EPU) and used donor sperm to fertilise the eggs (either known donor, or ID release/clinic supplied). Ie, there were two sets of embryos previously created, each created from each woman in the couple.

3 – the treatment plan may have been that the woman (W1) who had the transfer procedure done on Thursday, was expecting to have an embryo created from her partner’s (W2) eggs.

4 – W1 was on the table to receive the transfer, and the staff have confirmed HER NAME, her DOB, her Monash IVF Patient number, against the embryo ID's…… and they matched.These details are checked over and over again, even with patients that are known well.

5 – However, as much as it was W1 receiving the transfer, it may have been the plan to use the embryo created from W2’s eggs.

6 – if both W1 and W2 had undergone the egg collection procedures in the past with this plan, it would be so that W1 would carry W2’s genetic child and in a different pregnancy, W2 would carry W1’s genetic child.Thus, in a manner making both women contributing parties to the creation of the child.

7 – As W1 was planning to have an embryo transfer on Thursday, she didn’t receive an unexpected transfer; she was expecting the procedure that occurred.

8 – it is possible that the mix-up is that it is the embryo from W2 that they intended to use, and not W1’s own embryo.

9 – is it a stuff up – absolutely, yes, from a procedural perspective, but if the embryo transfer that occurred on 5th June results in a pregnancy, they are still the same couple taking home the same baby that they would likely have taken home one day in the future (likely just carried by the other woman).

10 - So it appears, that if a baby results, it is still with the correct parent/s(definitely the correct parent, as it was her own embryo).
I think a parallel to the blow back from this is….., (even though I don’t believe that this is legal in Australia, but just as an example)
Let’s say a couple were doing gender selection of their embryo…..they decided to use a male embryo, and instead a female embryo was used. It’s really a moot point.It’s still their own baby.
Is it going to affect the SP in the short term – yes.
Do things need to be learned from it – yes.
Is there any detriment to the women or the potential baby….not at all.It’s still with the same parents.
On the plus side, I picked up a bundle more shares this morning.
