    To replace a CTG the device would need to be linked to a printer as CTGs are sent to medical records for scanning due to legal reasons.

    It would also need to measure contractions. A CTG has 2 leads, 1 measures fetal heart (positioned over fetus shoulder which is usually lower abdomen in labour unless breech or transverse presentation) 2nd uterine activity is monitored, this is usually positioned upper abdomen for best results.

    It is important to assess the contractions in relation to any fetal heart decelerations to determine if the baby is responding to the normal stress of labour or if it is potentially getting compromised with lack of oxygen or acidosis.

    Ideally, the device would be waterproof with extended battery life to allow use during labour as that is the most common time women are monitored

    I'm optimistic this could be a gamechanger in maternity care......
