I see UCG as a 'halfway house' as far as CO2 emissions go. It is not the ideal choice but it is definitely an improvement.

In perhaps a few years time, when the global warming threat to the World is obvious to everybody, some of the better choices will be acted upon.

I can see China adopting UCG on a massive scale, once the initial projects demonstrate their advantages. It gives China a measure of energy security and a cleaner environment, all the while allowing its economy to keep on growing.

In the longer term though, I firmly think that solar will be the only viable path. That is only waiting for energy storage solutions to evolve. In that regard the front running candidates [imo] are lithium batteries in some combination with the emerging technology of graphene. There are already improvements in the pipeline using tin in association with lithium [about a 3fold improvement in efficiency].
