Some more information on Prof. Dan Peer

Prof. Dan Peer is the Director of the Laboratory of Precision NanoMedicine at Tel Aviv University funded by the US NIH and by the European Research Council. He is also the Chair of Tel Aviv University Cancer Biology Research Centre. Prof. Peer’s work was among the first to demonstrate systemic delivery of RNA molecules using targeted nanocarriers to the immune system. He pioneered the use of RNA interference (RNAi) for in vivo validation of new drug targets within the immune system, which has enormous implications in blood cancer and inflammation. Prof. Peer received more than 30 awards and has more than 90 pending and granted patents. His work has been published in top-tier journals including Science, Nature Nanotechnology and PNAS. One of these papers published in Nature Nanotechnology is the highest cited paper in the field of Cancer nanomedicine.

I note that Phylogica Scientific Adviser, Prof. Judy Lieberman (Chair in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Chair of the Executive Committee of Immunology at Harvard Medical School) has collaborated with Prof. Peer on a number of projects, including co-authoring a research paper in 2011, titled Special delivery: targeted therapy with small RNAs. In this paper, the authors state that the main obstacle to developing RNAi-based drugs is entering the cells and they note that an important bottleneck to effective delivery is getting the RNA efficiently out of the endosome into the cytosol where the RNAi machinery resides.

As one of Phylogica’s claims for its FPP platform is that it outperforms other intracellular delivery technologies in delivering biologic payloads more efficiently to the cytoplasm, this latest collaboration makes sense.
