The technology is a hydromet process that's able to recover battery grade chemicals from black mass, fertilizer (Ammonium sulphate) is the only by-product. NMT has been able to attract the likes of Mercedes Benz with this tech & has already built a Stage 1 (Spoke) shredding plant & is currently in the process of building a Stage 2 (Hub) refining plant to recover battery grade chemicals.
NMT intends to issue licenses to third parties so those entities can recycle their own batteries & be able to retain ownership over the precious metals inside the batteries. In return, NMT will make money from building the plants (Spoke & Hub plants) & will also receive a royalty on the battery grade chemicals that are recovered.
RIL is using the same tech through a convoluted, daisy-chain licensing deal from NMT & is currently in the early stages of commercialising the tech.
By the looks of it, ION is around 4- 5 years behind NMT & RIL, so there's still a lot of work to do here, but I'll be watching this space for any updates.
