The surveillance leverage of these UAV just cannot be over-estimated. The view on pg 4 (near Christchurch) shows a forward view of about 100km of coastline from the UAV. Infrared cameras on such a UAV could detect hot events anywhere in sight, instantly, day or night.
The Google Earth View ( URL) provides the same view from about 60,000 feet.
Australia has about 60,000 km of coastline. 600 UAVs doing circuits at 60,000 feet could cover this coastline with 100% overlap, obviously with very high redundancy (aka reliability). Think "CCTV" for our borders.
At 30000 feet the horizon is about 200 miles away ( URL ) ( Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone ).
