Perth could become the new global frontier for medicinal cannabis, if research efforts by two local companies and Curtin University prove successful.
Little Green Pharma - which cultivates locally grown medicinal cannabis in WA - has inked an agreement with a ASX-listed OBJ Limited, to explore whether its skin patches can be used for cannabinoid therapy.
Under the agreement, OBJ and LGP will collaborate on the project, backed by research and development from Curtin University.
The agreement involves establishing a formal 50:50 joint venture for the ownership and commercialisation of cannabis and transdermal (skin patch) technologies if trials, expected to take six months, prove successful.
OJB founder and managing director Jeffrey Edwards said the opportunity holds significant potential for all parties involved and could well represent a unique WA solution to be utilised in one of the biggest growth markets in the world today.
With the global legal cannabis market projected to hit $232 billion by 2027, one of the key focuses is how cannabinoid therapies can be delivered.
Most delivery system include vaping, tablets, capsules, chewing gums, oils and non diamagnetic patches, but many are limited in their ability to deliver an accurate dose, when and where needed, and not be impacted by first pass metabolism in the case of anything ingested or inhaled.
OBJ’s patent-protected diamagnetic microarray technology in both skin care and joint inflammation means that compared to normal patches, drugs can be delivered far more effectively to problem areas, meaning far greater control of dosage, time of onset and effectiveness.
LGP managing director Fleta Solomon said the combined effort had the potential to create some exciting possibilities.
“This could be a new frontier for medicinal cannabis,” she said.
