I could not find any reference to the presence of tuffaceous claystone bands in any of MTE’s reports. Do you have more detailed information? In regard to the impact of these stone bands on longwall mining it will depend on their thickness and location. If it is near the floor level then one way to avoid the issues would be to leave small amount of coal at the floor or subject to the rate of its breakdown to maintain necessary longwall advance rates. If it is near the roof then this should be also OK and there are actually number of coal mines in Australia with longwall systems operating under tuffaceous claystone roof (i.e. Ulan, Narrabri, Moonee, Austar collieries etc.).
