Arizonans are going to be happy about a project that needs to build a 100km railroad to supply tons of sulfur for mixing with water to make acid, then haul away ore for processing elsewhere, all creating fewer than 300 jobs? At least, that’s what the June 2018 PFS for Thacker Pass explained is required.

“Metallurgical testwork for the PFS was carried out at production facilities owned and operated by Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Co.,Ltd. (“Ganfeng Lithium”) in Jiangxi Province, China. The process testwork benefited from a close collaboration between Ganfeng Lithium and Lithium Americas’ respective technical teams.” So apparently Tempe has replaced China for this expertise. No need to hire anyone until drilling starts.

The LAC PFS predicted, “The main benchmark price in the molten sulfur domestic market, the Tampa quarterly price, has remained relatively stable since 2016 and is expected to remain $66 - $97/t (delivered) through 2023.” Well, now it’s up to about $200 per ton. A lot of sulfur comes from Russia, and is used in fertilizers. But with worldwide droughts, who needs farming?
