As I was curious I thought I'd take a look at this... NSW used 66,000GWh in 2016-17. A Newcrest presentation on Cadia from 2008 says it consumes 600GWh per annum I.e ~1% especially if you look at 2008 state consumption. If we assume the SAG mill is the vast majority of that, and like almost every electrical motor I've dealt with it requires about triple it's normal operating power requirement for a cold start up, then peaking at ~3% of state requirements is plausible. This surmised me.
