The following statistics are from globalCOAL ICE Futures Monthly Report:
• 60.7Mt of thermal coal futures and options cleared in March, the highest monthly volume since March 2022 when 85.7Mt cleared.
• 47.3Mt (78%) of total monthly volume cleared in ICE Rotterdam contracts followed by 10.9Mt (18%) in gC ICE Newcastle and 2.5Mt (4%) in ICE Richards Bay contracts.
• YTD’24 futures volume of 149.5Mt is 17% higher than the 128Mt cleared in YTD’23.
• YTD’24 ICE Rotterdam volume of 118Mt is 18% higher than YTD’23 volume of 99.9Mt.
• YTD’24 gC ICE Newcastle volume of 26Mt is 6% higher than YTD’23 volume of 24.5Mt.
• YTD’24 Richards Bay volume of 5.5Mt is 52% higher than YTD’23 volume of 3.6Mt.
• Coal futures prices continued to rise in March with the cal’25 contract for all hubs increasing by between 9% and 16% at the end of March compared to the price at the end of February.
