The reason why PNC frenetically bought debt portfolios in the past, IMO, is that fresh portfolios are easy to collect on, and if the effective amortisation is drawn out, NPAT can look good, and assets look healthy, and the CEO can seem to be Midas reincarnated. In this environment, raising capital and debt finance can be easy. Like a chain letter, it can look good early, and that sucks in more people, but it always ends sadly.
