The imaging agent they are working on is highly specific for a subset of breast cancers, those that are HER2 positive, which is only 20% of breast cancers. Hence when someone presents with a breast lump, it is not feasible to immediately have a scan with our HER2 imaging agent because it would miss 80% of breast cancers. The imaging agent cannot pickup any and every form of cancer and doctors will absolutely not send patients for MRI's out of an abundance of caution. The HER2 imaging agent will be used in patients who have a confirmed diagnosis of HER2 positive breast cancer (I.e. they've already had an ultrasound guided biopsy to confirm HER2 positive breast cancer) to see if the cancer has spread to their lymph nodes and help decide whether that patient needs surgical removal of those nodes, or can avoid surgical removal of the lymph nodes all together. Who knows what will happen with prostate, ovarian and brain cancer, but what we do know is that each new imaging agent for these indications will be highly specific for that form of cancer, and not pickup other cancers.
