If you have the time - go up to ngakawau and visit the charming creek tavern. The local bins workers will be there and have the best idea of how much quality coal is left. You'll get a good idea of daily coal export as well as the wagons are loaded just behind the pub. When I'm there, I can usally count three trins a day - they pass about 1k from our gate - although you'll need to be a night owl as there's usually one at about 2am as well. Talking to locals myelf, I get various accounts about how much good stuff is left - some say there's plenty and one other in particular gave me the impression that's it all mined out. I did speak to one of the line managers up at Stockton - - but he was pretty tight lipped. If you are brazen enough, you could button hole miners where they park up their cars to be picked up by the mines bus. One spot is the bottom of powerhouse road (ckeck out the map) , just across the railway track. Well, hope that helps.
