I wouldn't worry too much about these earthquake predictions.
The same logic could be applied to Wellington and Christchurch (oops) but the perceived risk is not high enough to deter building and continued residential settlement.
There is also a risk of an asteroid strike on the Otira rail line but not so high as to justify thinking it is 'just around the corner'.
I have recently walked/travelled much of the Otira line damaged by the fires earlier this year and was impressed by the standard of repair.
