Perhaps for a show of confidence when negotiating the last CR. Perhaps he needs a tax write off. Perhaps he was planning on putting it on black. Could be anything, I can't speak for the man. To me, that is just looking past numerous red flags just to say 'well this bloke has skin in the game, must be a winner.' And I imagine 400k to him looks very different than 400k to us.
