Well said, I remember asking a good friend who has been running a research team as a Quant for GS for about 15 years if there was anything to Elliot Waves. I was embarrassed to ask and he was disappointed in the question (he responded in the negative).
If there is anything to it I imagine it is exactly what you noted, a self fulfilling prophecy along with some recent memory of resistance levels that might sit close enough to one of the levels.
