The risk is that, if the early results are amazing and some big pharma does like it, they'll just launch a cheap take over bid instead of bothering with partnering.
If a bio was to offer say $40m, that's 5x or 400% premium (almost unheard of), the company would likely be obligated to present it to shareholders, and with so many trapped holders they may just vote it through.
$40m or 2.5c takeover would leave many of us long term holders well underwater.
