Actually Lux, this one has a basis in fact. Its called antimicrobial resistance and its been an increasing issue for many years.

I think its well understood that the reckless overuse of Antibiotics etc for many years has lead many strains of bacteria to become resistant to most antibiotics. This isn't just an issue when treating bacteria though. It also happens with viruses, fungus's and even parasites.

The bottom line is when drugs or chemicals are used to try and kill something, unless you do successfully kill it completely with the right dosing for the appropriate period then the surviving bacteria, virus etc has the opportunity to learn to live with the residual drug in its environment through adaptation, mutation etc over following generations. In the case of viruses and bacteria generations occur very quickly thus increasing the chances of a successful mutation. The more widely the drugs are used and the lesser the supervision to ensure the outcome is successful the higher the chance of adaptation.

The wide use of a variety of antivirals in recent years is slowly lowering the effectiveness thus the need to constantly create new ones. Its not necessarily true to say that antivirals are causing the mutations but rather the overuse of antivirals is making successful mutations more likely to become the prevalent surviving viral variants to spread around. Either way the outcome is the same.
