The largest shareholding in NOVO is the 36% held by Newmont Mining.
Eric Sprott has the second largest holding .
Quinton Hennigh worked as a geologist for both Newmont and Newcrest Mining where he expanded on his own original doctoral dissertation.
His hypothesis was that the Witwatersrand was once covered by acidic seas that could dissolve gold.
The emergence of photosynthetic life....blue green algae spewing oxygen into the atmosphere changed that chemistry forcing gold to precipitate out of sea water.
That belief would influence how Mr Hennigh looked for gold.
He had long held the belief that the break up of an ancient continent had left remnants scattered far and wide .
Similar age rocks to the Witwatersrand are found in India, Brazil and the Pilbara.
Where others saw coarse sedimentary rocks of little interest he saw potential.
They might hide an ore rich layer formed by a primordial sea floor.
He immediately suspected the rounded nuggets that prospectors were picking out of conglomerates were part of a more continuous bed of gold dipping into the ground and extending a long way.
''Its not the kind of thing that many people think would host gold and that might go a long way towards explaining why this thing wasn't discovered''
Little wonder then why Newmont are following this story with such interest.
While the jury is still out on whether that geological theory is correct ,Richard Schodde managing director of Min Ex Consulting says ''Why argue about models when you've got gold as evidence.
If it pays off it ,it'll pay off in spades''
Perhaps Newmont are now beginning to share that exact same sentiment.
