Many devices you buy these days only offer full functionality with a subscription plan. Think phones, TV boxes, match recording cameras, or the multitude of apps that have free and premium versions.
I'm guessing the box probably only gives you a BP reading without any interpretation or analysis unless you subscribe. Or perhaps the data is lost immediately without an account that keeps records and applies algorithms to readings.
