The whole idea of consolidation or splits just because people like a certain size of a share seems really dumb to me. In my opinion it should only be done when the smallest tradable unit is inconvenient to trade because a single share is inconveniently large for traders who can only buy whole shares or when the price is so low that a single tick is too big of a price difference for efficient price discovery.
I can see an argument that the current .005 tick size is a bit awkward. Having a minimum price difference of around 5% is pretty huge. Ironically if the price was 9c then the tick size would drop to 0.001 and you would get an increase in price fidelity. I'm for getting out of this price range through a consolidation for this reason but it should not be justified by the number of shares or the notion that Australians like a particular share price. No the blame for this price range being terrible should be placed on the ASX having weird tick rules not some cultural perveance for certain share price ranges.
