Its actually contaminants that drag down the grade. If you were to pick out pure spodumene you would be hard pressed to get a grade over 6-7% Li2O
Means for an ore body that comes out of the ground at 1% you have to reject a heck of a lot of waste to get your concentrate. Where as one that comes out at 2-3% you're likely to end up with more saleable product at the end of the same process. Both producing 6% grade.
