The final version of 'updates' are generally written in the office so that information sometimes can become a bit too simplified. I think the 400m of retrieved drill string would be that from the beginning of the washover process where ever that was. Since the well is already cased to most of its depth the drill pipe is unlikely to be stuck there. Spalling could occur in the unlined section and may have done so at the known fracture in the granite at 3700 m depth. My guess is that the 400m of pipe released is from below 3250 m. That would mean they are not far from the BHA now.
