When I mentioned a flywheel, I wasn't thinking of of a flywheel on a genset, but a very large electrically driven one, on a verticle axis, it in turn generates power on demand. Such a system was being considered for there Co-gen project at Mt Keith, (dropped since BHP took over}.
I don't know too much about the technology, all I know is that they have considered it as one of many technical solutions to powering their drilling operations.
