It is no coincidence the extension decision on the smelter comes up right before the next qld state election. Nor that it came up before this one. Glencore will and have been looking for third party ore to make it feasible, and for the sake of the region I would hope they realise it. Inwonder of Copper Mountain considered just using Glencores Ernest Henry concentrator as oppose to constructing a whole new one.
If they can't make the case it not only affects mount Isa but the whole corridor to Townsville where the refinery is.
Qld government investment in the Townsville Mount Isa rail line has been significant so hopefully the conflict with transport Glencore had will be diminished.
That area of Australia has the second highest resource in the world. Atacama is first.
