Diggers & Dealers mining forum chairman Jim Walker says positivity about the future of the resources sector was the overriding theme from the first day of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder conference.
A late influx of delegates for the conference, held mid-pandemic with local attendees only behind the cover of WA’s shut border, brought official numbers up from an estimated 1700 pre-conference to 1950 by day one .............

... “The first day also featured a keynote speech from WA Premier Mark McGowan, a late stand-in after coronavirus lockdowns prevented original presenter Ian Goldin from entering the country.

He reaffirmed the State’s stance to maintain its hard border to shield against the impacts of bringing coronavirus cases in from over east and made headlines with his call to Eastern States governments to keep their hands off WA’s share of the GST carve-up....

... “While buoyancy in the gold sector on the back of record production across the industry and sky-high prices – about $2660 an ounce yesterday – other commodities also presented included nickel (Mincor Resources), bulk commodities (South32) and lithium (Pilbara Minerals).
Cannaccord Genuity executive director of institutional sales Digby Gilmour said there is a lot of discussion around the margins of Diggers on where merger and acquisition activity might come after the Super Pit deal.
“There’s a lot of speculation post Northern Star and Saracen on who could be next and who could merge,” he said.
“I think prior to Northern Star and Saracen you may have seen more of the focus on the mid-cap golds like Ramelius, Silver Lake and smaller either explorers or producers neighbouring their mills.
“I think Saracen and Northern Star has changed things, and people are now contemplating larger assets, maybe that Northern Star could consider buying themselves or some of the mid-caps.”
Mr Gilmour pointed to Pilbara Minerals as one of the sleeper presentations of the first day, taking a positive view on the lithium sector, which has been hammered by a decline in prices over the past two years.
Diggers & Dealers continues today and tomorrow with another 39 companies presenting.
