Privately owned Ivanhoe Atlantic was formerly known as High Powered Exploration and is separate to Mr Friedland’s flagship company, the $27 billion, Toronto-listed copper producer Ivanhoe Mines.
Ivanhoe Atlantic’s IPO is being stewarded by Perth-based chief executive Bronwyn Barnes, who said Australia was the natural place to list the company given the “really strong understanding that the Australian market has for the iron ore industry”.
Unlike Rio, which will transport Simandou’s ore along a 650-kilometre railway to a Guinean port, Ivanhoe Atlantic hopes Nimba’s ore can have a shorter commute to port by travelling across the Liberian border and along an existing railway.
