"Tyro terminals all have a 3G/4G backup so there is no single point of failure if the merchant network goes down."
Not all, some of the older terminals use ethernet. Those clients using the ethernet terminals usually have a second 3/4G unit after a couple of telco outages. A single terminal is a single point of failure so a redundant terminal is called for if its mission critical.
"Disappointing since this is their main product and (almost only) revenue driver."
Agreed, makes about as much sense as Qantas not servicing their aircraft. If their staff have more than a cumulative 10 minutes working on mission critical IT infrastructure (and actually responsible for it) they will be addressing patch management before they take their next breath.
