Old news... It is known as Pin on Mobile and relies on security provided by an 'app/hardware'. However, there is extreme reluctance to rely solely on unseen 'equipment' to ensure your security ie a user has no idea if the security on the device is secure as they can't see the separate hardware eg. an eftpos terminal or dongle. Some will argue that hardware may also be hacked but that is extremely rare to date.
I believe Tyro has been trialling these various options as the PCI standards are updated they look to find a new terminal provider/form factor.
