I'm very surprised by some of the vitriol being aimed at Telstra regarding this announcement. They are actually trying "to do the right thing" by their fellow Aussies. This crisis is unprecedented with massive economic fall-out. What would you prefer? that Telstra don't hire more staff to protect profits rather than serve customers as the economy falls around them? Would you prefer they took small businesses to court for not paying their phone bill? As for saying where's the post crisis profit guidance? What a pathetic question to ask. Maybe those who ask it can confidently predict their own p&l and balance sheet post crisis - and other to say that it's going to be considerably worse and yet unquantifiable then that person is being severely economic with the truth (otherwise known as a liar). You only have to look at the swathe of announcements already (and soon to follow) across the world removing previous guidance to know that this is unprecedented. So I say well done Telstra - one of our biggest companies and trying to show some leadership during this crisis.
