A diluted EPS is the better metric to use in an EPS-times-PER calculation, which by its nature is forward looking. Often the difference is so small that either EPS suffices to do what one intends doing.
The difference that you mentioned was larger than I thought it should be, so I investigated it. In the general commentary in the Annual report there are two mentions of 142.2 cents (Page 2 and Page 14) that do not mention dilution. In the accounts, diluted EPS is thrice stated to be 148.5 cents. The general commentary is wrong, so my 142.2 cents is too. I had searched the Annual Report for the words “per share”, and I used the first EPS comment made, which was that EPS was 142.2 cents.
