FRANKFURT / BONN (dpa-AFX) - Efforts to grow medicinal cannabis in Germany continue to be slow. The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) announced that 79 companies had submitted offers in the current bidding process on Monday in Bonn. The Office will award the supplements by the end of the first half of the year and awaits the first harvest of the substance for critically ill patients in the fourth quarter of 2020. The agency wants to grow medical cannabis under state supervision and with high quality standards. Since the liberalization in the spring of 2017, medical cannabis is experiencing a boom in this country, but the cultivation is delayed - also due to legal disputes. In the spring of 2018, for example, a court had stopped the BfArM's first tender because the deadlines for companies were too short. The originally planned year of production 2019 was therefore unstoppable. Also in the current procedure give it again Bieter complaints, it was called now. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices spends 10.4 tonnes of cannabis spread over four years, significantly more than in the first round (6.6 tonnes). In addition, the substance should continue to be imported from Canada and the Netherlands, to meet the growing demand from patients. Once only about 1,000 patients had a dispensation, doctors today can freely prescribe cannabis if there is a precise justification. Doctors and pharmacists report a strong increase in demand, there is no exact data. The active ingredients of cannabis can relieve pain in cancers, nausea after chemotherapy or spasticity in multiple sclerosis. Part of the medical effectiveness is controversial
