Updated Australian Critical Minerals List and a new Strategic Materials List (16 December 2023)
Last Saturday, Australia updated its list of critical minerals and created a new list of strategic materials, which could benefit Havilah's assets at Kalkaroo, Mutooroo and Prospect Hill.
A. The updated Critical Minerals List has been expanded to include:
- fluorine
- molybdenum [Kalkaroo]
- arsenic
- selenium
- tellurium.
Helium has been removed from the list.
B. The Strategic Materials List contains minerals:
- that are important for the global transition to net zero and broader strategic applications, specifically the priority technologies set out in the Critical Minerals Strategy
- for which Australia has geological potential for resources
- in demand from our strategic international partners.
However, their supply chains are not currently vulnerable enough to meet the criteria for the Critical Minerals List.
The government will continue supporting the extraction and processing of these minerals and monitoring their market developments.
The new Strategic Materials List consists of 6 minerals:
- copper [Kalkaroo, Mutooroo]
- nickel
- aluminium
- phosphorous
- tin [Prospect Hill]
- zinc.
C. The Australian government will review its Critical Minerals List and Strategic Materials Listat least every 3 years.
The relevant minister has the discretion to review the lists at any time, and the government may make interim amendments if there are significant changes to technology, trade, domestic capacity or geopolitical developments.
A Strategic Critical Minerals Hubs feasibility study will explore where Commonwealth and state and territory governments could support critical minerals infrastructure precincts producing commodities likely to become subject to supply chain disruptions.
