I guess when you've got one shot at a deep diamond core, and you know certain variables about an orebody (i.e trying to drill into a bending piece of paper potentially 1km downwards) you've probably got to go with a likely target to prove a hypothesis.
Looks to me like they went into the long side, expecting to find out at least to some extent how deep it went.
If they went top down the piece of paper might have moved.
Just a guess - not a geologist.
