In a recent article I read, before the pandemic, the 40 or so Mexico / US border collection centres (owned by CSL and its competitors) contributed 10 to 12% of the total plasma supply in the US. Maybe the person in charge looked at that figure and said, “That’s not much we can live with that”
Besides denying struggling families an income, this has all the makings of a supply chain shortage we are experiencing with computer chips and vaccines. Nearly all countries source the bulk of their plasma supply and products from the US. Perhaps once we start seeing immunoglobulin product shortages and massive price increases this might prompt a change in policy.
In the meantime I hope CSL can open centres in other countries, after 20 years (!) the UK has recently changed its policy allowing people to donate plasma, in some parts of Canada they are paying donors. So is CSL setting up shop there? That’s a question I would like to ask at the upcoming AGM.
