The mud can bond with the lighter hydrocarbons and effectively make the reading heavier then it should be. My father was an industrial chemist for Mobil and he explained how this happens. Unfortunately as it was contaminated it wasn't a reliable reading.

It should be noted that there are some very light crudes in Cuba, so particularly when considering that most production to date is upper sheet the lower sheet due to thermal gradient should be a lighter crude. There might be some interesting results with crude quality due to compartments with in structures as source is likely local.
