The profitability of banks in a contextof negative monetary policy rates:the cases of Sweden and Denmark
The introduction of negative monetary policy rates in Sweden and Denmark hasproven to be an effective monetary policy tool. Negative interest rates – incombination with other policy measures, such as quantitative easing and foreignexchange interventions – have been effective in lifting inflation and inflationexpectations in Sweden and in stabilising the exchange rate in Denmark. The factthat banks’ profitability has continued to improve and that their function in themonetary policy transmission mechanism has been maintained – creating theprerequisites for positive developments in the credit supply – has contributed to theeffectiveness of monetary policy in both countries.
