Perhaps some of our NZ based friends could petion their ever so clever government to commision a study of the environmental cost of buying lesser regulated coal from overseas. Where it need be loaded on a ship and transported 5000 kilometers across asia and the pacific to arrive in NZ so they can all switch their lights, AC's and soon electric cars. Then compare the carbon footprint cost to our world where they take responsibility for their own needs by digging it up themselves with all the proper planning and environmental constraints they like.

Wake up Jacinda, Winston and James; ensure NZ takes responsibility for its own energy needs and give industry the confidence they need to plan for and cater for the NZ's energy future. Actually James is a stats man; Let him do the work and come back with a clear, intelligible answer that does not push the answer out to some as yet uncertain future.
